Tennyson // Before & After

From flood damaged to unforgettable, King Arthur Terrace at Tennyson shows what is possible when a compromised backyard is completely rethought rather than patched over. The space had been impacted by flooding, the materials were worn, the levels did not work, and the yard had become largely unusable, despite its incredible riverfront position. Poor access and an inefficient layout meant the potential of the property was hidden and the family was not able to enjoy the space as intended.

The transformation began by stripping the site back and rebuilding it properly. We removed the existing deck and reconstructed the structure with new posts, bearers, and corrected levels, ensuring the space would function safely and effectively for the long term. The backyard was redesigned with multiple levels supported by retaining walls, allowing us to unlock usable space and give each area a clear purpose while working with the site conditions.

Access defined every stage of this project. With no access from the top of the property, all machinery, materials, and waste were transported by barge, requiring detailed planning and precise execution throughout the build. The finished result includes a refined deck, floating concrete stairs that visually connect the landscape, a spa positioned to take in the river view, and generous zones for family life, including spaces for children to play.

The planting design reflects the clients and how they live, with cottage style gardens, fruit trees planted in cotton rings, and layered under planting of herbs and cottage plants. The pool, designed and installed by Rogers Pools under extremely challenging conditions, anchors the entire landscape and elevates the project.

Delivered over more than a year, this transformation captures the shift from flood damaged and unusable to functional, personal, and beautifully resolved.
