For this stunning gem, nestled in Brisbane’s inner city suburb of Paddington our beautiful clients were yearning for more privacy to surround their pool area, with a tropical aesthetic filled with lush leafy plants, as well as a contemporary bench seat to enjoy long afternoons by the pool.
Five cantilevered, powder coated, steel posts provide much needed height in an integral section of the backyard. These were custom fabricated to fit the space and provide optimal screening to the available space. We’ve incorporated stringers for the stunning Stephanotis floribunda (Madagascan Jasmine) vine to grow to fill in gaps throughout. This vine is a high achiever and thrives in our subtropical climate, producing white scented waxy blooms throughout the warmer months.
This cantilevered structure creates space for layers of lush greenery below, we’ve utilised several specimens to reflect the subtropical story incorporating Alocasia brisbanensis for it’s large lush leaves, a fantastic foliage to include in smaller spaces to create the illusion of more room. Next the Heleconias are planted fairly close together along the boundary to compliment the cantilevered structure with additional top level privacy.
Our planting palette in the lower levels of the garden showcase the striking foliage of Crassulas, Rhaphiolepis, and silvery textures of Kalanchoe ‘Silver Spoons’ throughout. The broad rounded leaves of the Ligularias, affectionately known as the ‘tractor seat plant’ - you can see why they’re called this! It’s stunning leaves add interest below creating depth and a tropical feel. You’ll also notice Zoysia tenuifolia or no mow grass, planted as a carpet of greenery for it’s slow growing habit.
Surrounding the pool, a premium selection of Olive Limestone tiling and Spanish Green Waterline tiles from Artisan Exterior ensures longevity. The Olive Limestone product is high density and hardwearing with gentle olive and grey tones for a contemporary feel. The perfect canvas for the pool surrounds to really shine.
One of our favourite features in this project would have to be the custom built benchseat, which gracefully frames the pool area with it’s curved contemporary shape. Being able to make this feature come to life with several constraints such as access by the pool is what makes our projects stand out. Anything is possible, we thrive on creating outcomes like these for our beautiful clients. Here delicate Native Violets grow beneath the seat to cascade and soften this focal point.
