Opening Round at the Gabba is always electric, but this year it was extra special for one young Lions fan. Penny had the incredible honour of being the Brisbane Lions team mascot for the opening clash against the Western Bulldogs — and it’s safe to say it was a moment she’ll never forget.

From the moment she arrived at the stadium, Penny was buzzing with excitement. Wearing her Lions colours with pride, she stepped into the behind-the-scenes world of an
AFL game day — something most fans only ever dream about.
The highlight of the night came just before the first bounce.
As the crowd roared around the Gabba, Penny took her place alongside the Brisbane Lions players, ready to run out onto the field. In front of them stood the giant Lions banner, proudly supported by the team from Brookes Blooms and Penny’s mum, Emma.

Then came the moment.
With the stadium energy building and thousands of fans cheering, Penny ran out with the Lions, bursting through the banner alongside the team. It was a magical experience — the noise, the lights, the sea of maroon, blue and gold in the stands — a true opening round spectacle.
For Penny, it wasn’t just about the run through the banner. It was about feeling part of the team she loves, standing shoulder to shoulder with the players before one of the biggest games of the early season.
The Brookes Blooms team and Emma proudly supporting, helping create that iconic moment every Lions fan looks forward to on game day. Their support made the experience even more special for Penny as she charged out onto the field.
Moments like these show what footy is all about — community, family, and creating lifelong memories.
For one young Lions fan, Opening Round wasn’t just another game. It was the night Penny became part of the team.
And judging by the smile on her face as she ran onto the Gabba turf, it’s a memory that will roar in her heart for years to come.
Go Lions!
